• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Ornamental lathe restoration

The sale of the tom senior mill nearly paid for the thiel and freed up a bit space, I also had a purge of stuff and did some reorganizing, so my shed is a nice place to be. I had a visit from the president of the society of ornamental turners so cleaned the place up a bit as you do. The thiel...

    Ornamental lathe restoration

Got sidetracked a wee bit with this thing. Its a theil milling machine probably the best germany built. it is way to good for my capabilities but it cost a similar amount to the little tom senior I had so who am I to resist. I had to beef up the support for my shed as it had already sunk a...

    Falls (not water)

Just put a machine lifting strap around the bottom, tipped washer on its side and slid it up. Sat on the top of the landing with feet braced on the newel post and stringer. I think that was the problem, no way to pause and regather. 3/4 up I had to stop but keeping it still was using strength...

    Dr Al's Latest Folly

I used my car boot powerfile loads for my machine resto work, they certainly made the motors to last, it would probably still be going if I hadnt stood on it.

    Falls (not water)

I checked the model weight and it is 85kg dragged up 12 steps. I wont be doing that again when its time to replace.

    Falls (not water)

I am still a nipper compared to some of you old timers but I have noticed a loss in strength. A little while ago I was taking a new washing machine upstairs, (the laundry room is up there). I put a strap around it and started pulling it up from the landing. I got 3/4 of the way and started to...

    Dr Al's Latest Folly

Apoligies for aging you quite considerably, dont know where I got the impression you are retired. Not sure if it would work with aluminium but on my cast iron disc sander I polished the surface and smeared it with finishing wax. This enables the self adhesive disc to just peel off when needed. I...

    Dr Al's Latest Folly

I'm always impressed by your projects Al, it took me 2 days just to surface grind and fit a strip to align the vice on my new mill. May I ask what was your job.

Not so much a 'build' as a 'choose one and fit it out'

I just got one of these from an auction set to 50% humidity, seems to be helping stop the rust monster

    Coopering

Nice little wadkin 6"RA planer in the background, with templates on the wall. I wonder if that is how the bevel is put on.

The advantages were you get less adverts and a cleaner browsing experience making my time on the forum smoother. Erm no thanks, I really dont think you should pay...

Oak dining table build (complete, and inside)

We have a lovely oak refectory table, wife wanted it spraying white so I took it to bits and hid it in the loft and then bought a cheap one she could tart up. I also just got given an oak table top that was about to get chopped up, probably £150 of oak that was going to be used as fire wood.

    Fox planer thicknesser

I've got the exact model for small stuff. Its very loud, the fence is horrid but it will run for hours happily. I only really use it for thicknessing. It needs extraction to run or else the hood gets clogged and it cannot be ran without it in place. (safety feature). I dimensioned a few thousand...

The inevitable is sadly upon us…

A friend of ours really struggled after they lost their dog. They too cremated, My wife made a lovely little necklace of a night sky with stars using some of the ashes encapsulated in resin and silver. Some might find it a little macabre but our friend found it comforting.
