• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

They look great. Wish I had the electronics skills to do this. Photos actually give the impression of the music playing!

Cased frame sliding sashes with hand tools

I think if I'm in need of the additional weight I might try using up the scrap I already have. I hadn't considered a tackle shop. It's actually quite difficult to get weights in Northern Ireland and few companies are willing to ship over given the literal weight! My second method was to be using...

Cased frame sliding sashes with hand tools

Weighted sashes to be used. I've a few old weights that were donated to me years ago by a friend so will hopefully get to use those. If memory serves correctly they were quite large diameter so I would think larger than I would need though maybe not lead so we'll see: I seem to remember quite a...

Cased frame sliding sashes with hand tools

Surely someone has documented all these variations in a handy textbook!

Cased frame sliding sashes with hand tools

Finding the time is most of the battle and skill in making I've come to find. I've never had much luck in finding sash planes and they would certainly speed things up especially if a few needed making: but these can be made with relatively few handtools that probably most people, the ones using...

Knee Deep In Sh-T is and understatement.

Those lids are scary. Doubt you'd make it out alive if it suddenly gave in!

Cased frame sliding sashes with hand tools

Preliminary stages of making some sliding sashes and cases. Probably 3 sliding and further fixed lights but haven't decided yet. These will be almost entirely made with handtools. I thought I'd make one sliding sash and post as a WIP if there's interest. These windows will all be opening to...

    Exterior choice of wood

My vote is for accoya. Not cheap but if you install and allow to weather it could last decades without needing any work at all. Next would be iroko.

    Workbench identification

We have a lovely family from Wisconsin staying with us for a few days and we were chatting about interests. I mentioned woodworking and the husband showed me a workbench he picked up from a charity donation event. He isn't a woodworker but obviously appreciated the piece. I nearly fell off my...

    Bundwerk barn

Are these pictures posted as the work progresses? If so, that's a tremendous amount of work being done. He certainly does work fast! Are the black vertical (presume) steel posts anchoring straps?

    Patio table refurbishment

It did take a long time though I did that job in the winter and left the doors in a cold garage so wasn't ideal... After smelling the iroko though I could take anything.

Mike's Workshop Build (Extension & slates)

Pdf seems to be in order now. Now I can see beautiful old slates and a lovely clay ridge. Lovely building and great to see the pictures. Thanks for doing all the computer wizardry. Brilliant skills!

Mike's Workshop Build (Extension & slates)

Ok, well have a look at that. Still nice to have though Pdf seems to end before the roof is finished but assuming that's all in the other version?

Thanks for the pdf. Looks like a great resource.

    Patio table refurbishment

Here's a photo taken today of a TREATED iroko door (with treated Siberian larch panel) with an UNtreated iroko door frame and adjacent untreated Siberian larch siding. The door was painted only once 5 years ago and never touched again. Sorry, it's a varnish I think but as stated it's only been...

Looks great. Was it iroko? You'd know as it's a horrible smell. Great stuff but hateful to work with.

American here in Oundle (Peterborough) - Brand new to woodworking

Tables look great. Can I suggest one potential addition? It might be beneficial to add a diagonal or even a sheet of ply to the legs to help prevent racking. Is it screwed together? Leaning on the table over time might cause the screws to widen the holes incrementally.

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

To finish this thread off I installed an under door sealer activated when a plunger is compressed in the jamb on closing the door. Involves cutting out a section 20mm deep. I hadn't thought of this before but it would've been better to cut before applying finish and glass but nothing was...

    Bundwerk barn

He's turning all that mixed with water by hand presumably in a wheelbarrow? That's a lot of bags to mix by hand!!! What sort of ground did does he have and how far down did he need to dig? I remember reading a lot about ice and thaw and ground heave and depth required for footings on another...
