• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Sometimes collectors can work in your favour.

At the moment there's a thread in the hand tools section about the prices of second hand tools increasing. I recently and amazingly, to my profit, found out there's a similar thing going on in the world of film cameras. I thought it worth telling the story firstly because most of us rarely come...

Music I never imagined myself listening to.

I don't like string quartets. As a rule I think there's a special place in musical purgatory which is reserved for them along with heavy metal, non-dub and non-ska reggae, C&W, glam rock and opera. I also dislike doom, gloom and tragedy in almost any art form, with perhaps novels being given a...

    Viable Size for Bandsaw

Good Morning All, I have recently moved house and due to space constraints had to sell my bandsaw which was a big'n. I think I can find room to store a smaller model and bring it out onto the patio when I have to use it. I've got a feeling that that will mean a table top model. My question is...

    Price of Centre Bits

Jim Bode Tools in the USA had this set of centre bits (and a few other sets at the same time) and all appear to have been snapped up: https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... its-102401 As you can see, they went for a fair bit of money. How much do you think they will have to be going for...

    Let Wine Breathe?

Quite often people will uncork a bottle of wine and then let the bottle stand for an hour or so in order to let it "breathe" i.e. undergo a bit of oxidation or absorb a bit of oxygen, or both in order to improve the flavour. Anybody who has ever heard of the concept of surface area to volume...

    Scale on a Rabone Rule

If you have a look at the first picture on this Rabone rule which is for sale, https://www.oldhandtools.co.uk/new-arri ... xwood-rule you can see divisions above the main inch markings which appear to be quarters and halves of an inch but they are sequentially numbered e.g. 30 32 etc. I can...

    Japanese saws for deeping/resawing.

Ages ago I bought one of those Japanese saws which is crosscut on one side and rip on the other. Having used it a few times, I now prefer western for cross cutting but I quite like it for rip work - when I can keep it straight, that is. What are the backless Kataba saws like for...

Health & Safety: Fungus on Wood

I recently had to store some wood in a friend's damp garage while I was moving house. A couple of bits of rough sawn European walnut have developed a thin surface coating of what I can only describe as fungal rosettes. They are pale green to grey in colour. One hears a lot of the danger of...

    Degreasing Plastic

I've got a kettle which has a black plastic lid. I lodged for a few weeks at a mate's house while changing flats. I stupidly placed the kettle near the hot plates of his oven and as he is an enthusiastic fryer of all food, it ended up caked with a layer of more or less hard baked fat. Getting...

    Conspiracy Theories

For the Mods: There is a danger that any discussion arising from this might veer close to politics, so I will understand if you decide to bin the thread. I've just been on the comments bit of a newspaper website where someone has asserted that there is no covid pandemic whatsoever. Others said...

Always carry a plane with you.

I teach English in Germany for a living. Having discussed food with them yesterday, my students said that they wouldn't mind trying a bit of English cheese, so I went to the local supermarket which happens to have Wensleydale with bits of apricot in it. I duly brought that into work this morning...

Has anybody ever made an ironing board?

I have to buy an ironing board in the next couple of days. It occurred to me that most of them are hardly built to last and that a medium term project would be to build one. There is, however, the obvious stumbling block: the padded bit that shirts etc have to lie on. That led me to the...

    The Latest from Bridge City

I just got an email about this drilling jig: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXx0RIsSu5s The video's worth a watch. It is typical Bridge City: probably works perfectly, is aesthetically slick and has a fair old price tag (in this case US $ 539). That said, it does look as if it would be very...

    Do they still make ...

I teach English these days and I was just discussing consumerism as a topic with a group of my students. The subject of lawn mowers cropped up. I was trying to describe the old purely mechanical ones of my youth. No engine, no electricity, just a mechanical device which made a noise which seemed...

    Does anybody use a padsaw?

Ages ago on an impulse I picked up a lovely rosewood-handled old padsaw for peanuts at a flea market. It's a lovely thing but I've never had call to use it. It has rather coarse teeth and they are a bit irregular as if previous owners had maintained them without particular care. I stumbled on...

    Banana Plane?

Have a look at this: https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... lane-99346 I imagine it could come in great use if you are making wooden models of bananas but otherwise I wouldn't have a clue what it is for. I could imagine that this might even challenge AndyT.

How does one get out of Google

I thought I was logging in to Gmail on my iphone but I appear to have logged into Google and now I really want to get out of it. Can anybody tell me how to do it please? I've pressed every button under the sun but got nowhere. There's a terrible kafkaesque quality about this and I want out.

    The Lions' Tour

As we have done football and touched on cricket, it might be some consolation for those disappointed by the former to remember that the Lions are doing well on their tour. It would be great if they come back with a clean sheet.

    New (Simple) Veritas Honing Guide

A bit of idle internet trawling has just turned up this: https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/to ... em=05M0940 Essentially it seems that Veritas has taken the idea of the old Eclipse guide and enhanced it in every sensible way that they can think of. The price looks reasonable and given...

    Ticks

The horrible little things as opposed to the marks in homework books. A week last Thursday I was having a shower and found what I thought was a small scab on my shin. It turned out to be a tick but it had buried itself too far in to be pulled out. So off to the doc. After much grubbing around...
