• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months.     A question for those who know about sound waves: would a crinkle-crankle wall be more effective for sound insulation than a straight one? I suppose the lower frequencies will still pass through, but wonder if reflected waves could help cancel out incoming sound

    The last thing I cut was a tension adjuster for a spinning wheel I restored and the wood was a flowering cherry species I had lying about. The thread cut well without any pre-soaking and it was finished with some candle wax to prevent it from binding. Will try to get a couple of pics

    Out of interest what thread is that? I've used a UNC tap quite successfully for wooden fittings for the lathe headstock. The thread box looks like it cuts with a wider crest and gullet than a metal die. Presumably that's to provide a bit more 'meat' to the thread. Has anyone tried flooding the...

    My understanding that they are an ichneumon wasp with adults around 1mm who target the moth eggs with their own eggs. Won't stop adults but should reduce if not eliminate the caterpillar stage. Not sure how species selective they are as they are also sold to combat cabbage moth and clothes...

    Out of interest have you ever tried trichogramma wasps against the moths? I tried a predatory wasp against whitefly some years back, with great success, but that was in a greenhouse. Wondered what results might be obtained outdoors

    No cuckoos in these parts for a couple of years now. A pity as they are a fascinating bird. I gather they are very specific in their target species so probably impacted in both places with a decline in songbirds here too. We've got maybe half the usual number of swallows here this year
