• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    22" rat

Wow thats a grand old age for rats. My daughter has kept them for years and I usually get the call to put one out its misery after 2-3years. They do make great pets, much better than hamsters and such. They have way more character and bite alot less.

    Micrometer storage

I watched that video by Mr Gelbart a while back and realised I had a gallon of 85% phosphoric and a container of brick acid and a container of white vinegar. I've always had a fight with rust over the years. And have tried everything. Its quite a challenge with 16 machines.

    Twirly-whirly or wiggly-waggly saw?

We still have one of those shops which is much loved in the town, I find them cheaper than the sheds for alot of stuff. I drove to york yesterday and when I got back an article about york appeared on my phone.

Someone told me about camphor blocks as a rust preventor so I'm trialling them. Not expensive and come in little rolls. I've been adding them to drawers containing tools.

    Ornamental lathe restoration

I have been pondering about color and these float my boat. The green might look a bit christmassy with all of the brass. I had an MGB that color when I was a kid

    Ornamental lathe restoration

In the past I would just polish and allow to age/patina. But with this I'd like to try and maintain the shine, like they would 100 years ago. Back then they used shellac which lasts really well. There is a product called Nikolas laquer which is used by clock guys for the faces. You can even get...

    HDL LDL

I think my record for doing a machine was about 13hrs. I could do a big wadkin lathe in a month pretty much full time hrs. I am enjoying this one and seem to be taking my time.

An update on my statin use. I got retested recently and no further action required. I have improved my diet a bit but nothing dramatic, just fruit and veg every day and a bit fasting. I'm pleased I didnt agree to tablets straight away.

    Ornamental lathe restoration

I'm new to the world of ornamental lathes so not sure what affect a worn bed could have, if it were purely a wood lathe it wouldnt bother me much. I think I spent about 7hrs on this bit over a week. I find it quite relaxing.

    Ornamental lathe restoration

Before the summer has gone I thought I'd get the bed and legs painted. The bed has a moulding affect in the casting that I wanted to define a bit better. Purchased a selection of cheap end mills, suspecting I will snap a few. I had one half decent cutter which I crashed within about 10min of...

Ian’s new workshop. The Wonky Donkey. Wiring all done - ish

That sounds bizarre, considering how much ply is used in house building over there, you would of thought they have automated cutting at the factory. I dont think I've had a wonky sheet over here.

    Wallace has got me thinking.

Scott I'd check that tolkein, there is one at auction soon expected to fetch $300,000 . I should really itemize my shed just in case I pop off and the mrs sends in the scrap man.

    Another "Which Planer Thicknesser" thread.

These names you give your better halves is puzzling to me, I will contemplate them whilst I'm doing the washing up, hoovering, cutting the grass, washing the win.......;)

Woodshop extended - machine placement advice, please

I like the tolkein picture Scott, I have one that I got when I was a kid. Worth a few quid apparently. Sorry for going off topic guineafowl

    Ornamental lathe restoration

After surface grinding all the bits which took about 6hrs, I seriously thought about how nice a hydraulic grinder would be instead of turning a wheel backwards and forwards with one hand while moving another wheel with the other hundreds of times. I cleaned up the ends on my lovely little lorch...
