• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Curtain rail - fixing issues

Curtain rail or pole, my place had nicely moulded timber length with little wooden supports each end where a rail was screwed to. (post war council). You couldnt really attach a modern pole to because it looked odd. So I removed most of them. They took some getting off.

    laptop memory

I added extra RAM a while back, I think its 16 now, I also put in a 900g SSD. I rebooted the machine and gained a bit space. I still dont get the 120GB for apps, there is no where near that being used. The biggest is a game at 15GB, the rest are in the MB or KB range. Simon my desktop is a...

    laptop memory

I got a message saying I need to free up some space so had a looksie. It says I only have 2.8G free but all of the listed items do not add up to over 200G. Also when you look at installed apps its no where near 121G.

    Toolbox

One of those big flexible builders mixing bucket things. For small jobs I quite like an apron with pockets. When you see the americans with their huge tool belts with everything but the kitchen sink on them. I couldnt work with all that bouncing around. Maybe a hammer loop

Houston - we have a problem

Surely its common curtesy to leave access to your place clear at all times. I cant imagine a works van is needed to be on hand that much.

    Ornamental lathe restoration

The way I understand it is there is cheap gold leaf books which are made from copper and other stuff which is thicker and really quite cheap, a few quid a book. This stuff can tarnish easily and needs sealing to preserve it. Then there is real gold leaf which is just gold, a full book of 25...

    Ornamental lathe restoration

First time I've used this type of paint plus its getting a bit cold for painting, hence the big run, once its hardened up a bit I will scrape it back with a stanley blade and recoat. This type of paint is used on canal boats and I quite like it, except the curing time is ages. Im contemplating...

    Ornamental lathe restoration

A bit more done, there is a lip on the casting which is going to bug me. So I had a bright idea to rout it off. Cast iron is pretty soft stuff. I only took light cuts and it worked a charm. I had another bright idea to help stop the rust beast eating my bits in the cabinet. I put a...

    Sanding Glove

I reckon it could be useful for arthritic hands or if you would like to keep your fingerprints. It also has a big warning not to use on spinny things

    Ornamental lathe restoration

Third time lucky, maybe this time it wont end up a rusty mess. But one never knows, we are just temporary custodians. When I peg it the scrap man might have a field day. I could always leave my ornamental stuff to the Society of ornamental turners. They find good homes for machines as permanent...

    Ornamental lathe restoration

A bit more done Someone has spent alot of time and effort on this at some point, this has a new screw and nut, the machining detail on the screw is really good. I collected the bed from blue diamond machine tools which is a machine wonderland. Its only 5miles from me and I never...

Apparently Catios are popular these days.

I've never understood cat owners, they let them wonder the streets for days. There is always the facebook post saying have you seen my cat or cat found dead by the road. I couldnt have a pet and then have to hope it came back ok. I'd only have a house cat or build something like this.

    Ornamental lathe restoration

I changed the type of paint I use on this, I have always used quick dry machinery enamel from my local motor factors. It uses synthetic thinners and is dry the day after and can be handled. For this I used a tekaloid coach enamel which is thinned with white spirit and is more durable I think but...

    Recycling from a church

I rescued some pitch pine parquet from my old edwardian school that was getting demolished. I found it lovely stuff to process. Instead of chipping the bitumen off I sawed it off, then dimensioned every block on my little titan thicknesser. It went down in my hallway so nicely, I barely needed...

    Ornamental lathe restoration

First bit of final spraying done, I was a bit dissapointed by the finish. Considering the amount of prep and then it started raining so I had to spray inside the shed. Not very 19thC, I think I will make something more appropriate
