• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Make your own bandsaw... out of Wood!!!

Here you go. Just to prove that I do make the odd thing: a bedside thingy standing on top of a computer table.

Make your own bandsaw... out of Wood!!!

Forgive me if this has already been posted but have you seen this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6vjn_VIGq0 A bloke makes an apparently functioing bandsaw out of wood. What do you think?

Is it possible to change a password once logged in?

I'm asking this question because I suddenly couldn't log in. I eventually requested a new password and obviously am now here. My question is: how can I change my password once I am logged in? Thanks in advance and apologies if this is posted in the wrong place (which wouldn't surprise me).

Weird Pronunciation in a YouTube Video

I recently watched Schindler's List on the TV and found Ralf Fiennes' portrayal of Amon Göth to be remarkable. I wondered how accurate it was and came upon a YouTube clip. It turns out that the film version of Göth was, if anything, watered down because some things would be just unshowable...

A possible need for a computer programme.

I don't think that this belongs in the CAD section but if the Mods feel otherwise, please move. I've just signed up for The English Woodworker's (Richard Maguire) latest project, a nest of tables. The first instalment comes with a cutting list. I reckon that I've got enough offcuts of cherry...

    Phil Bennett RIP

One of the rugby greats has gone. He was one of that remarkable Welsh team which made watching the Six Nations in the 70s torture for an English kid like me. What a player. And of course there's that try which he played a key part in for the Barbarians against the All Blacks...

    Deeping / Resawing

I've posted on this in the past as it is (for me at least) such a difficult thing to master. However, as ever practice helps. I'm slowly getting better, the measure of this being the amount of planing I have to do afterwards. I've just done a 2' x 6" piece of walnut and ended up with two pieces...

    Background Wall Colour

I'm hopeless at knowing what colour goes with what, although I can usually recognise it when somebody else has got it right. Therefore this simple question: what sort of colour should a wall have which is being used to display framed black and white photographs? The frames will be black and the...

    The imperial and metric thing.

For the mods: this may be considered skating a bit close to politics, so feel free to bin it if you think it out of order. You're all by now no doubt aware that imperial measures may be coming in out of the cold. For most woodworkers, I doubt if this will prove a problem. As it happens, I tend...

    Chisel Bevel Angles

Can anybody explain why the angles on some of these chisels is so steep? https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... els-102306 Given that they're obviously old kit, I assume that the previous user had a good reason for those angles on the wider chisels. Can't think what it was though. (I'm...

    Ronnie O'Sullivan's win

I'm sure that everybody knows that Ronnie O'Sullivan equalled Stephen Hendry's snooker championship record. Every time the Sportsbloke of the year thing comes round, it seems to go to people who we would all struggle to remember later on - unless of course one is very keen on the sport...

    Stanley 444

Jim Bode Tools has just sold a Stanley 444: https://www.jimbodetools.com/collection ... box-102965 I'd never heard of it. Here's a YouTube clip of a bloke showing how he mastered it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35ErH4WSK_k So own up then: who's got one?

    Happy Phone Snappers

I went into a fairly serious photo printing place yesterday to get some jpegs of images printed. The lady blew the images up to the max and said that they were well inside the boundaries for enlargement. I innocently opined that I would be surprised if anybody turned up with unsuitable images...

    My first digital infrared photograph

Adrian, you have a talent for asking questions that require thought-out answers. The most straightforward answer IMO is that you have to develop your own aesthetic. However, that sounds ridiculously pompous. FWIW the guidelines which I've arrived at are: a. Show the natural world in all its...

    My first digital infrared photograph

You may remember a bit of a discussion about B&W digital photography from a couple of weeks ago. I discovered that my new camera can do IR phots so had a bash. Here is the first photo which I was pleased with. IR is probably a bit marmite so I will understand if you don't like it at all. It's of...

Fitting an old clock in a case.

I've been given an antique clock. It is about 6" in diameter and has a pendulum. The idea is to build a case for it. I've not decided if it should be wall-mounted or free standing yet but that is not particularly relevant. The thing is that the clock body has nothing by way of attachment...

Rust, Inaccuracy and a Combination Square

I thought I'd mention this short cautionary tale in case anybody else finds themselves in a similar position. My tools have little chance of getting rusty - I use oil on my sharpening stones and there is no source of water in the workshop. The only time that I seem to end up with spots of rust...

Sometimes collectors can work in your favour.

With ref to the idea of B&W photos being well suited to structures, here's one I took last week of the roof of the Sony Centre in Berlin:

Actor slaps comedian at Oscars ceremony.

You may well have heard about this. If not, this is the gist: at the Oscars ceremony the compere/comedian made a joke at the expense of the wife of the actor Will Smith. His wife has bad alopecia and the joke turned on that. Mr Smith was understandably annoyed. FWIW I think you can have a go at...

    Problem downloading software.

I've just ordered DDig recovery software and got sent the relevant email to get the download. It informs me that I can't do the download because I haven't got enough disk space. This is nonsense as the software apparently requires 20 Gb (or is it Mb?). Either way it doesn't matter because this...
