• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

A question about Google

I have recently had an update to the operating software of this laptop (Apple Airpad). Since then my Google is stuck in Google Images (which I had never seen before) and I want to get back to normal Google. I can't find anything which enables me to do that?

Any suggestions?

Andy...bit confused with your terminology. Laptop Airpad :eusa-think: Do you mean an iPad?

When you say Google...do you mean Google the search engine or Google Chrome ?

Roger, you have laid your finger in the wound of my IT knowledge.

It's an ipad air.

I'm now thinking of saving all my files onto a storage device and returning it to the factory settings in the hope of it behaving normally.

It always was on normal google but the swines keep nagging me to switch to Chrome. If I've accidentally hit a button that might have happened. I don't need chrome because ordinary google does what I want.

No worries. Let's see if we can get you sorted out.

Apologies if some of this tells you something you already know.

You are probably using Safari as your browser on the iPad. It's the default.

You can use the address bar in Safari either to enter the address of a website OR to search for something directly. You do not need to enter Google.com first, wait for that website to come up and then enter whatever you want to search for into Google.com search bar.

Safari basically says 'That's not a valid web address therefore he must want me to search for it'. Safari has a setting inside it that tells it which search engine (ie like Google.com) to use. The default is Google(.com)

To summarise .... that means there is no need for you to enter Google.com first into the Safari address bar. You simply put in your search term directly into that Safari address bar. That avoids Google nagging you to use Chrome.

If you want to use a different Search engine as the default then you can do that by going into Settings > Safari > Search engine.

And while we are talking about Settings and Safari, ( if you also have an iPhone and a Mac then do not proceed further ...let me know) unless you have anything in history that you need, scroll down to Clear History and Website Data and select All history. That will most likely get you back to the status quo without doing a full reset.

Out of curiosity, I went into Safari on my iPad and entered Google.com. Top RH corner it has two tabs Gmail and Images. If I click on Images then I get that slightly different entry box that lets me put in images to search for.

If I hit the back arrow then it reverts back to 'normal' Google.

Hope that helps but you're very welcome for us to do a Zoom session sometime. Or even the telephone !

Roger,

thank you for taking the time to produce such a comprehensive and clear explanation.

I'll sit down with that this evening and work my way through it.

All the best,

Andy.

Going directly into the address bar was the solution, Roger.

May all our problems be so rapidly solved!

Thank you very much.
