• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Anybody else still got an iPod?

I got an iPod about three years ago because I don't like the idea of using my phone for music. I tend to the philosophy of one tool for one job, the exception perhaps being multi-planes.

Anyway, I hadn't used the thing for a while when I dug it out the other day, charged it up, did a software update and then used it via bluetooth with a grapefruit-sized speaker called a boombox. It seems to me to be the perfect combination for background music while working at the bench and because the whole set up seems so self-contained, I have hardly any worries about dust getting in the works.

Then I read that Apple finally discontinued the iPod last year and as luck would have it, I bought the final version. I presume that it is now a "while stocks last" item but if there's anybody who's looking for a simple arrangement for music in the workshop, I think it is worth consideration.

I've got a reasonably newish version which I used to use very occasionally, but haven't done so for severial years now. It would be absolutely fatal for me to use one in the 'shop as I'd be only half concentrating on staying 'in the zone' and the inevitable but sad result is that Her Grace would come a calling far more than she currently does. So it's silence in my 'shop, bar the ticking of the wall clock - Rob

I still have my original ones. I never sold any of my old apple kit.

I still have an iPod Classic plus a couple of iPod Touch's. The batteries have effectively gone in all of them but each morning I drowsily hook up an iPod Touch to a power cable and listen to Times Radio whilst I slowly return to wakefulness. I use it for other things too, such as listening to podcasts and photographing my electric and gas meters when I have to take readings.

However, it's the iPod Classic which remains my delight. It's mounted in a docking station and I play part of an audiobook on it each night with the sleep timer set to 30 minutes. There's nothing quite like having someone read you a book as you drift off. I have loads of obscure CDs and radio recordings stored on the iPod too, the sort of stuff that the likes of Spotify and Audible just don't host. Anyone for Tony Hawks' 'Twelve Days Of Christmas' or Neil Gaiman's 'The Brightonomicon' or an old Radio 4 play about the flight of Charles II called 'Boscabel'? It's great to be able to dip into such classics. What a pity BBC Radio 4x never dips into the true classics in its archives.

I still have and use the ipod classic 128 gig version from 2011, still works perfectly, bought it brand new.

I do, a really old one (v2 or 3, ~20yo) with the touch wheel and 4 buttons below, and one which is about 15yo with the solid-state drive. When they haven’t been pinched by one or other kids (who both think modern pop music is cr*p and prefer my stuff :eusa-clap: ) both still get docked in that big Apple speaker of old and the sound is very good.

My daughter, 18 yr old, had to chose a piece of graphic design to discuss as part of her university course. She choice Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album cover. How pleased was I. She likes the music too. Her tutor, also not born before the album was released was also a fan so we are expecting good grades :)

I too have an Ipod somewhere but do prefer music on the phone played through either an Alexa smart speaker or a JBL charge 5. By bluetoothing the music that way I can have the volume up high and still here the phone ring.

I think I’ve got about 6 kicking around somewhere!  Including one of the original bricks.

We used to go to the States a lot and they were always much cheaper over there. They also used to bring out new models frequently so I had to upgrade didn’t I?

I must dig them all out and get them working properly.
