We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Bandsaw lower blade guides

I have managed to break the metal carrier for the lower guide bearings on my Record Power bandsaw. RP don't stock spare parts so where is the best place to look?
 
It depends on which model, I think some of RP's line is parts-compatible with other machines but I'm not 100% certain.

It might be easier and cheaper to make one, or go without, the bottom guides don't particularly do that much as generally the top guides do about 95% of the work anyway.
 
What model RP Bandsaw is it? A picture of the broken part would be helpful.
 
I’ve got a BS300E and the lower bearings are in two separate parts. The rear thrust bearing has its own mount. For this particular model you may be able to operate the machine with just the rear bearing without too much issue if only the side bearing mount is broken?

Carter probably make a lower mount to fit but they aren’t cheap.

I made my own but it took a while and I don’t take on work like this as I’d have to charge more than Carter. ;)
 
I have a BS500. I have read that the lower bearings were less necessary than the upper ones and if sourcing a replacement turns out to be too difficult then I'll consider that a bit of luck.

The only metal work I've done was to make an ashtray for my mum in Metalwork class at school around 1978 but I'm always happy to give anything a try.
I don'y know anything so, what metal should I get. I'm going to be brave and take a stab at mild steel as a guess.

Your bandsaw possibly won't go slowly enough to cut mild steel (100-200 feet perminute) and a metal cutting blade. So I'd go for aluminium as easier to cut - use paraffin, diesel or wd40 as lubricant with the bandsaw as slow as possible.
Glue the old one back together and make the basic measurements.
Drill out the hole for the sliding ballrace carriers first, then the slots for the adjustments for each bearing and get that all sliding nicely and only then cut away the minimum of unwanted metal to make the blade slot to keep the strength up and then form the clamping spigot.

When I made that part as a replacement for my machine I used aluminium alloy for the main block and inserted a piece of steel bar for the adjuster, held in with a machine screw. I’ll see if I have a picture somewhere.
 
Crikey! That's very professional. I'm guessing you have an engineering lathe.
I expect mine will probably look like the dog has been chewing it :D
 
Having a MW Lathe and Milling machine is handy for jobs like this. Years ago I would have made do with a drill and hand files.
 
I made these for a friend for his Elu bandsaw after the original guides broke a few years ago:

All done with a hacksaw, file, drill, and tap, except for the eccentric pins that the bearings sit on, I had to make those on the lathe.

Really not worth the effort :lol:
 
This is the upper assembly made for the same machine. All pins, bushes & fasteners are stainless steel.



The original guides on some of the RP Bandsaws has attracted a lot of criticism over the years. Later models seem to have better ones.
