• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Work on the teardrop has ground to a halt for the time being, so I have turned my attention to a job which has needed doing for a while now: my bog oak collection. Here's my store with half a dozen boards already out:

I need some long straight bits for the teardrop, but with the size of these boards, getting access to pieces anywhere other than the top of the pile is something of a nightmare. So, I decided to take everything out, rip off the waney edges, and select the better boards for the teardrop and a table I'll be making as and when. When I say they're not all straight, I mean it:

I cut that into 2 foot lengths and planed them up:

I am going to take a boot full of bog oak (and bog ash) up to Carlton Scroop next weekend, so if you're going, or know anyone who is, and want some, that would be a good time to grab some bits from me. Any special requirements, let me know in the next few days and I can look something out whilst everything is accessible.

Here are some of the boards stacked outside the workshop:

I suspect I may have one of the biggest stocks of the stuff in the country, and I'll never use it all in my lifetime. I'm always happy to sell to fellow woodworkers, but you really need to visit to pick something suitable.

Now, my question. I have a huge amount of trimmings:

Obviously, much of that will end up in the woodburner, but there is plenty that could be cut into turning blanks for tool handles or pens. Do you think that would be worth my while? I don't want to spend hours at the bandsaw and then be left with heaps of square-sectioned kindling!

Look at the state of my workshop! It's a disaster.

WOW! Just WOW!...

Personally I'd say spending time in trimming up those offcuts - even if not all squared - would be of use ... even if just the initial cuts when trimmed off and leaving for those interested to finish themselves 👍. I'd probably be interested depending on postage costs.

That said... I understand where you where at intervals sorting through those boards to get to what you wanted. I've various t&t/waney edge boards of kiln dried and air dried English yew to go through - and decide what to do with. I got them back around 1989~1992 because I was making Falcon blocks. Life events took over and most of it just got stored. Now I've cleared out the majority of the other offcuts of various sheet material for the worktop units I'm nearer to getting to the boards and other timber.

Hi @Mike G ,

Depending on price, I would love to purchase some of that bog oak. I'm also planning to have a trip to Carlton Scoop next week.

To give an indication, how much would a board like the second one from the left cost from you?

For the trimmings, perhaps an easy way of utilising them would be to say cut them into 750mm or 1000mm lengths bundle them up into a packand sell them that way.
I would be interested in such for either tool handles, piece accents, or for making inlay bandings.

It may also help me and others to know what time you will be around next week?

thanks
Ian

I'll work out prices later, Ian, and come back to you.

I expect I'll get to Carlton Scroop by about 10.00, and will likely stay until they kick us out at the close of play. If you want to find me, ask Andy (Tools 'n Tat), who is usually first table just inside the door.

I've moved everything, so I'm not 100% certain I've found the same board. Anyway, if I have, it's 145 x 25 x 500, and I'd be asking £20.

Well, if anyone was wondering if they ought to go along to Lincolnshire next weekend, there's your fresh incentive! Nice one, Mike.

I know but the wife is having a foot operation on the Wednesday before so I don’t think I can make it.

Pete

Is anyone interested in some thin flat stuff for use as veneer? I have two or 3 such pieces, one of them 3 or 4 feet long. It's of no use to me.

It always amazes me that they used to blow this stuff up to get rid of it.

Edit....I've just checked......it's about 8 feet long, 4" to 6" wide.

Sounds like enough for the outside of a ukulele... Or quite a few chessboards...

What on earth do I do with stuff like this? I know we're supposed to be precious about every little piece of this rare timber, but honestly, what use is this?

I made 100+ pen blanks:

......and 40+ chisel handle blanks:

The aftermath of that was three bin fulls of kindling:

I suppose you’re going to be limited as to how much you can take with you, but I’m confident that you won’t be bringing any back home again!
I'm absolutely certain I will. It's not a huge gathering, and very few know I've got bog oak. They're going for the tools.

Although i am home on Friday night so its only 5 hours from there...
😳

If you're even comtemplating such a journey, let me know the sort of thing you're after before you set off. I'd hate to think that all that driving resulted in going home disappointed (well, other than the carrot cake, of course).

Last shout for bog oak for Carlton Scroop. I'm taking around 20 smallish pieces with me, but if you want anything else, you've got just a few hours to let me know. Otherwise, it means a trip to the Essex/ Suffolk border for you.....

Had a lovely day out at the tool extravaganza. I plumped for the sausage roll - very nice.
It was a pleasure to meet both @Mike G and @Pete Maddex, and pick up a good stock of bog oak from Mike.

Having a look round at the tools, I have come to the conclusion I have enough tools  (well maybe some Lidl chisels next week, and maybe a small router plane). Probably still need more clamps though :ROFLMAO:

Good time was had by all, its great to catch up and eat cake.

Pete
Good to see you again Pete, thanks for the Jam and making my set up look so much better by having your chair and box next to it 😉
Whoops didn't realise this had posted 🫣

Good to meet up again with Andy, Pete & Mike, shame I couldn’t stay longer but I was on route to the cnc’ers to do some edge banding for work next week.

Big thank you to Andy for the bandsaw blades & compass plane, I’ll try & remember to take photos of my planes restoration.

I only took a couple of photos both of Andy’s hand driven valve grinder (if I’ve remembered that correctly) a really interesting bit of kit.

Spent the evening having a curry with a couple of ex-forumites down in Cambridge, one of whom Simon of Oryx design a few of the older members might remember as the chap who hosted the olde Kent bashes many years ago, pleased to say he’s keeping well.

It looks like the autumn handtool extravaganza is on the 10th of October this year, hopefully I’ll be able to get along though once again it clashes with the D&M show

Two and a quarter hours driving from Suffolk to Lincolnshire through Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire........yep, that's do-able. Two and a quarter hours driving from Suffolk to West London around the M25.......no way on this planet! See you at Carlton Scroop.:)
