• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Hi All,

SWMBO decided it would be a good idea to do some "upcycling" and use a pallet we had to make some Christmas stars as presents. Guess who has to implement said idea! It was all going well until I started thinking about gluing them up.

Here is what I have:

They fit nicely but I cannot for the life of me decide how I am going to clamp them as I glue them.

I do have some band/box clamps but I think that might be proper fiddly.

Any other ideas?

Cool idea. What do they look like from the other side? Will the other side be seen? Can sacrificial blocks be used? Glue or screw them to the points then clamp between them?
 
I see your dilemma :D

Ive been staring at it few minutes without any obvious answer. One way would be to use super glue and activator, doing each joint in turn and using hand pressure whilst spraying the activator.

Alternatively, I could imagine, fixing some blocks to some thick plywood, then with some loose blocks on the opposite side cramp with a small sash cramp. It would still need to be done as subassemblies though. I cant in my mind see what shape blocks you will need to help pull the joint tight.

SWMBO/LOML has all the good ideas - I'm just required to make them work :lol:

Screws and tabs might work - you probably wouldn't notice them among all the nail holes!

Would CA glue really be strong enough?

I have thought of making a loose frame with wedges. tapping a little at a time.

Might also try the band clamps but I never seem to have much luck with them. They always just slip all over the place.

Will let you know what I end up going with.

CA would certainly be strong enough unless you are planning on using them in a situation where structural integrity would play a large part.

Not sure that your intimation that making a frame with wedges was your idea when it was a suggestion on another forum to this same question.

Just to be open and transparent the idea of the frame I did actually think of myself even if I did not vocalise it. The important part, which came from "the other side" was to use wedges.

Apologies - I was not trying to steal anyones IP, merely trying to simplfy the thread. If I was really trying to hide this and pass this one off as my own I would not use the same username or occasionally multi-post on all the forums I frequent. I am sure that most people on here visit "the other side" once in a while ;)

I think I would glue up in stages. First glue the pairs of each point together, once they are all done, the assembly into stars is much simpler task. CA would be OK, I have used it to glue the brass tubes for pens into the drilled blanks, only reason for going back to epoxy, I need the longer open time.
 
I would use a combination of glues. Use whatever your favourite glue is (Titebond, epoxy, whatever) apply to two of the surfaces but leave a small area free of glue. Then use MitreMate to act as a temporary hold while your main glue goes off.
 
Hi All,

Just thought I'd let you know that masking tape worked. I did it in three sections, gluing 2 points together then join those and finally slot the last point into place:


The joint is strong enough - I dropped one by accident and it was the wood that split, no where near a glue joint!

:eusa-think: That's above my pay-grade!

Some are for presents and a friend that runs a "vintage chic" style shop says she would like to try selling some.

What you actually do with them is beyond me :lol: It is a bit like cushions - the fairer sex seem to like them even though are pretty pointless (pun not intended).
