• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

The new neighbour is a professional tree slayer, JACKPOT!

Being wiley git, I saw he had some logs and offered to take them off his hands, after running them through the saw i let them dry a bit in the garage which has been 20c+ for a few months and today decided to skim the faces to get a better look.

Any idea what they are? a scant bit of research seems to suggest Elm

Important thing to do now is make the new neighbour something nice, you’ll never be short of nice timber again.

That's a tricky one, some really weird colouring going on there but I'm not sure it's Elm, It looks like Alder? :eusa-think:

i did some looking around and the interlocking grain is very small compared to what i have seen on London plane. also the colour is vary varied and striking in places, i couldnt find anything similar for alder.

hopefully we have a tree whisperer that will know for sure

This is definitely elm (both main boards and ends) and it's not a million miles away from what you have there but it's hard to say for sure that it's the same wood:

it could possibly be pear wood, I've seen some pieces that look similar, obviously unsteamed pear, it varies a lot, otherwise one of the 'fruit' woods is best I can answer.

If it's from a tree surgeon who mostly does domestic work, one of the many decorative species in the Prunus family would be more likely than any of the normal commercial timbers.
It looks like it could make something interesting though - perhaps a small table to show off the colours, if they don't all fade to brown?

it is indeed a local tree surgeon, i just havent seen anything that really matches it, the grain pattern with variety of colour is quite pretty.

I have planed a face and left it to dry out a bit more and see how/if the colour fades or evens out. ill probably remove the bark when the DRAW KNIFE i ordered comes :) (getting handy)

The bark doesn't look like the London plain I know, my guess is cherry.

The bark is very cherry like I agree. I've got one to cut down as it happens. When I get round to it.

Whatever it is it looks useful.
He's local and a tree surgeon, what I would do is take a piece round to him and ask his opinion, I'd be very surprised if he can't tell you what species it is.

Thanks chaps, lets go with Cherry, I rarely see my next door neighbour who's the tree surgeon so haven't been able to ask.

when the moisture gets to a decent level ill have a go at making some pretty things.
