• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Mobile data usage concerns

I have a wifi question related to my property.

My house is single storey and long (approx 30m end to end) and the walls are about 400mm thick. My internet is provided over a mobile network (router takes a sim card) but the router wifi signal stuggles to get through the thick walls. To remedy this I bought a wifi extender but found out the router isn't compatible with it (both TP-Link) so I dug out another normal router and wired it directly to the first router and got the extender to pick up the signal from that. All seemed well.

However, being on a mobile network means that I am subject to a data limit and I noticed that since I installed the wifi extender we were really burning through the data and last month I had to buy extra on top of my monthly allowance of 150Gb. Logically, I assumed that I would only use data on demand but I have taken the extender out and I'm now monitoring the data usage to see if it has affected it.

Is it expected that my data usage would increase with this set up?
 
I don't know where you live but with the extended range could a neighbour be piggybacking using your wifi ?
 
short answer - no. Data usage should be the same whatever you use to extend signal.

Security comes to my mind here. Someone else using your network?

My Asus router gives me a breakdown of which clients on the network have used data and how much. Just looked and my wife on her phone uses the most! Maybe go into the routers settings and see if it does similar and change the passwords while you are there.
 
If you’ve got multiple computers (and other devices), you could use a big chunk of data just on software updates. September is always a big month for Apple OS updates and if you’ve got a bunch of apps installed on mobile devices, automatic updates could be significant. Are you doing anything to manage data use from software updates? You can set up a Mac to act as a cache so that at least you don’t have to download the same update multiple times. Or you can try to only update when you’re on some other network.

I live in a rural village and all the houses are detached and have big gardens and my neighbours on both sides are old ladies that don't do 'technology'. Also, all the routers have security passwords but there's nobody close enough to pick up a decent signal unless they parked outside.

It would seem that it can only be down to our usage then. My wife likes to watch Korean historic dramas (each to their own) and I spend my evenings cruising the internet and watching Youtube so that probably explains it.
 
You can use over 2GB per hour on average quality video (5mbps for 720p video). If you’re watching in high def, it’s going to use more data.
