• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. I am in the process of making a small set of drawers for a customer. I have already made and fitted a large cabinet, small wardrobe and desk and now the set of drawers to fit under the desk.
 
You embarrass us mere mortals with your speed :)

I do enjoy seeing what you are making even if I don't always comment so do keep them coming.

What paint have you settled on for your sprayed MDF?

I'm going to be tackling some MDF before too long and could do with sourcing a tough durable white paint.
 
Thanks, I am happy that you find postings interesting. I always use Morrells solvent 2K paint in a 40% sheen Robert. I find it is easy to use, fast drying and pretty durable. If I need something that is really tough I use the polyurethane 2K which is as tough as old boots and ideal for table tops etc. ;)
 
I suppose that brings another question - how do I as an individual buy Morrells paint? I think they sell to trade only.... unless someone knows different?

Alan, what sort of 'undercoat do you use on the MDF as a sealer? MDF just sucks up everything in site.

I am sure they supply to anyone Robert as I just order it on the internet.
Well Phil I use the Morrells MDF sealer for MDF. It is a clear type of sanding sealer and dries very quickly and seals very well.
I got them finished today and will be delivering them next week.

 
That's just the kind of finish I'm looking for. Is that just their standard white or a RAL colour or something that you need to specify?

Have you got a link to the site you buy from and product code so I know what to order please.

looking at Morrells home page I don't see an obvious online sales section.

Oh and on the subject of the cabinet - do you have a knack with full extension runners to get them perfectly positioned or do you do what i do - get them about right then fiddle with the drawer face position then fix it to the drawer box?

As for the colour I contacted them and asked for a match for Farrow and Ball pointing and they mix it for me. They do use the RAL chart though so any colour is available from them. It is expensive but does go a long way. I also buy the MDF sealer from them which is very good for the edges. As for the drawers and the runners I measure the distance for each drawer box and draw a centre line on the carcase and drill along the line for each runner. I do the same for the drawer box and attach the runners. I then start at the bottom and place the drawer front on spacers and drill a hole at the centre through both the front and the box, then insert a screw to hold it. Then I drill and screw each one from the inside. HTH.

You do make a good looking job of this kind of thing and I especially like the dark drawer boxes. Great stuff.

We used a lot of RAL colours for spraying light fittings back in the day and I always thought RAL 9016 was a nice clean looking white so I'll go for that. 9010 is a bit creamy looking.

And one last question.. do either of these products need thinners to spray them and if so what is it?

My HVLP setup will spray paints that are thicker than a conventional setup will atomise so if they can spray without thinning I'm sure I'll be ok.
 
Hi Robert, yes that is the sealer. If you want to spray this sealer on then you will need thinner for it. Personally I just brush it on the edges full strength and spray a light coat on the faces if need be. As for the paint you should not need any thinner as the activator is enough which is added 1 part activator to 9 parts paint. I find two top coats is enough to give a good build and coverage. The thinner I use is standard nitrocellulose thinner which Morrells also sell although I buy mine from the local paint supplier. HTH. ;)
 
Once again thanks very much. I have cellulose thinners but it sounds like I may not need it.

I'll order next week even though I don't need it for a few weeks yet.
 
I delivered the small chest of drawers today and got some pics of the units I had built now they are all in place.
This is the small wardrobe that sits above the stairs. inside it has a pull down rail for access.

Here is the tall unit that houses document files along with the desk and the chest of drawers.

The desk was designed to fit around the radiator and is battened to the wall.

I also took some pics of the downstairs units now the proper handles have been fitted.


I am also pleased to say a relative was so impressed with them she has asked me to quote her for under stairs cupboards too. :D

Oh and I ordered £100 worth of paint and primer today! Not even bought any MDF yet :lol:
 
Thanks guys. No Robert, the customer has his own handles and asked for them without. He is going to fit the crystal ones like the under stairs units. Yes the paint isn't cheap, I often have to explain to my customers just how expensive it is to spray the units and how much longer it takes to put the finish on. Luckily for me they understand and have them painted as they like the spray finish. Are you buying MRMDF or standard?
Well Mark, I have to admit to feeling proud when I see my work in a customers home and they are pleased with it. Even more so when I am pleased with it too. :D
 
I think someone is being economical with the definition of desk there :) . It is nice to see everything in situ and the continued repeat orders must be very satisfying.

It will be moisture board when I get round to it. Need to make some bathroom fitted furniture so wanted good paint to look the part.
