• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Well guys, it is with some sadness that I have to announce I am giving up the business. Work has been slow recently and after a fall from a ladder I jarred my back and had to have some time off. Money is tight and rather than delve into my pension I am getting a job again, light duties but not woodworking. I shall downsize and continue wood working as a hobby again, small stuff of course to keep my hand in. I shall still be keeping my eye on the forums to see whats happening of course. ;)
 
My sympathies to you, you had a fantastic work rate and seemed to produce good quality solid work. A sobering lesson to those of us who dream of one day chucking in the day job and making a living from woodwork - I know I couldn't match your speed or skill level! Best wishes for the future - we would still love to see pics of your hobby stuff too!

I was beginning to wonder if something had happened, Alan, as we haven't heard from you in a while. I'm truly sorry to hear this news, because if ever there was someone who should succeed in business, it is you. Your work ethic is first rate, and some of your pieces have been really nice. I doubt you've got a single dissatisfied customer.

If ever I catch myself thinking "it'd be fun to do this for a living" I only have to remind myself that the easy part is making the stuff. The hard part is getting the orders in the first place. I hope your job works out OK, but keep your eyes open: you never know when an opportunity is going to come along.
 
My sentiments too Alan.

Keep looking on the bright side. Life is a funny old thing. Who knows, your recent experience is probably taking you to a destiny which is going to enhance your life with new and possibly better opportunities - and without the hasstle.
 
As someone who has started and run a business I know how hard it is. I also know it can be hard to get out of business too. Personal guarantees on leases, loans whatever tie you in.

We went through a bad patch a few years in and I came very close to losing my house. Hope you can get out without such worries adding to the pain.

On the plus side you never work so hard as when you work for yourself so you should find life a little easier once the stresses of leaving the business are in the past. Keep in touch.
 
I was sorry to read your message Alan knowing how hard you have worked to build up the business.
Do you know why the level of business has dropped off? Has there been a "new kid on the block" buying work with low quotes?
Obviously the UK economy is not that strong over all still but I feel it is slowly improving and despite the haves and have nots divide,generally there would be enough of the "haves" who would have desires for your sort of work.
I hope that you can find suitable employment shifting to a lower stress lifestyle and make woodwork your hobby once more.

Not much I can add to what others have said, very sad to hear this and wish you all the best in the future. Reiterating the comments of others you work hard, fast and what you make looks fantastic; I have always looked forward to your WIPs knowing they would be a source of both inspiration and learning.

I'm sorry to hear this. I've always enjoyed your posts and projects. I hope that you'll be able to continue on a part time/when you want basis. As someone who is also looking for a job, all I can say is good luck.

You never know how things in life will work out and maybe in 12 months time we might be talking about you making a comeback... ;)

Agreed. Sorry to hear that you're packing in the wood mangling, but I'd advise keeping it going as a hobbyist just to keep your hand in - Rob
