• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

We'll ..

I've decided to go ahead with the next "shed" build. 30sqm to miss the building regs
I just need space
I don't need it to stand for 100yrs!
I need to keep the rain off, and the wind (and rats) out.
Somewhere to keep my metal working and car resto stuff, out of , what has become, my wood working space.

I've had the wriggly tin for a while .. and collected concrete slabs for a floor. I have some salvaged patio doors.

So .. get ready for a real red neck, cheap and cheerful shack :D

at the very least, storage, and somewhere dry to shape metal and fix the cars.

Most effort will be made to keep the roof water tight .. as my current one is prone to frost on the underside, that drips when the sun comes out .

The next priority is sound proofing, so I can make loads of noise , without upsetting the neighbors !

1st off, is to have a reccy and see where to put it, (in front of, or side by side my current shed) and what 6x2's I need to order fro the frame and cills
 
I reckon there should be a separate sub-forum for all these shed builds. We have so many of them. In fact, I'd say that such a sub-forum would likely be the busiest one on the whole forum.

I look forward to seeing this one Rich. Probably a tad envious as well - I'd love to have a metal shop for my motors, and somewhere dry for them to live in :|

You're by a canal aren't you? Is this why you get the odd rat? Mind you, I was greeted by a dead rat near my shop door the other morning - it was horrible. I scuffed it away with a bit of old wood and it was gone the next morning - maybe a fox.

totally utilitarian .. and absolutely nothing like the other posh builds on here !
It will be sticks in the ground, and a roof on top ! :lol: then stuff stuck on the sides to keep the wind out :D

the last one I did (our last house), took a bit of planning, but went up overnight and was finished in 3 days
That was a joist and ply floor too. Neighbors were confuselled at the appearance of a complete shed appearing over night ! :lol:

Yes, Pinch .. we have lots of rats here by the canal .. we "rescued" a Ferrel cat, as a working cat just after we moved in. She get's a lot of rats and the off rabbit or two.
Still, the rats need precautioning for !

A few years ago, I shut up the shed over winter. a rat got in, ate through the concrete floor and shifted a barrow load of earth on it's way out :shock: You wouldn't believe it !!

I have let the garden go a bit wild over the last year or so :oops: ..
and I'll need to get batteries charged and carbs cleaned , fresh fuel etc.
so I can shuffle a few cars around to make room.

I've got a sliage bay that I am going to convert into a shed/store at some point in the future once I have scavenged the materials. We would definitely need a shed forum

without being disrespectful .. I've always thought of WH2 as a shed build forum. With the odd bit of woodwork thrown in :shock:

It's nice and useful and very informative .. especially with Mr G on hand :D

not that I'll be doing anything properly on this build :eusa-dance:

Got to admit I was surprised at all the workshop building going on and the amount spent on some of the builds but then you do need to have somewhere to work.

Whenever I work in a professional joinery shop I'm always amazed at how much space their is between machines and how much space is under utilised, unlike a small workshop/one man band operation where every scrap of space is precious.

Hmmm yes, there a lot of shed/shop builds on here at the moment, but chaps, the guv is building one too!

Took a few "before" photo's today

it's closer to the house (and nieghbors) .. so I'll have to add extra sound proofing.
the second option, will block light (and heat) to the current shed, which required no heating any time the sun comes out .. even in the depths of winter ! .. I hope the new shed will be similar.

I'm planning either way, to build close enough, so I can open the doors to each other and effectively have a double sized shed, without having to do building regs .. bit of a cheat I suppose .. and hopefully it's not too far across the line to get in trouble :shock:
 
Well it certainly looks like you have the space for it. It sounds like your current shop is not insulated because you mention the sun being able to heat it. I just use a portable heater for when it gets really cold otherwise I just wrap up toasty with thermal undies and am fine.

When you starting the actual clear up and foundation.

Crikey Rich, if it wasn't the electric pylon in the background, I would have thought these pics are the back yard of an eccentric American far out in the wilds :lol: Very cool indeed Sir! I guess the 'eccentric' bit is correct - and said in a complimentary way chap. 8-)

it is insulated .. only 50mm all round and plasterborded inside, but for all the windows I used twinwall pollycarb, so sort of like double glazing, ant lets all the heat of the sun in. the front (south facing) door/window are is approx 8' x 8'

Today it's very frosty out .. the canal is frozen, but the sun is out, so no fire lit yet :-)

as for the foundation .. :lol: :oops: ..
the current shop is on gravel and pad stones .. with a vapour barier under the wood to keep most of the rising damp out. ! just marked out, carefully scrape the top soil of, so the ground is still firm .. lay the pad stone bearers spaced out. Gravel in between, plastic on, then the framing on top. I creosote the bottom timbers, all the rest is untreated and is still fine after about 13 yrs so far. the double door end, where I used to bring cars in and out, has 6x2 posts each side, sunk about 2' in the ground wrapped in plastic and filled with creosote before concreting in as you would a fence post.

for the new build, I've been collecting paving slabs, that I intend to use as a floor/slab for the build to sit on.

I did say it was going to be a cheap build ! :lol:

I still do that sometimes when no one is looking :lol:

it was a long time ago .. I think I was about 15/16 at the time .. so had a different outlook on life .. and .. you had to watch what was on :) ! .. or not :( ..

4 , (maybe 5) channels at the time !

and as I remember .. it was a black and white TV I was watching ! :shock:


Kids these days don't know how good they have it !
 
Ah... half a 90s VW Polo... like one does ... looks like a magic trick gone wrong! :D

Looking forward to the build... I like resourcefulness and creativity challenges on a budget.

lol .. yep .. the "bread van" ... I have both halfs ! ..I was robbed ! ...

it got "broken in two" :lol:

it failed the MOT on a front wheel bearing ... it was a 20 ton press to fix ... I thought it was such a stupid design, I stripped it for parts and cut it in half ! :shock:
wheel bearings should be at most a half our job for DIY !

Back half will be a trailer .. undecided about the front , so far
