• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    House Insulation

Here is a recent picture after the roof tiles and solar panels were fitted last week. You can see that there is very little depth under the guttering.

    House Insulation

I moved home earlier this year and my new house has very thick brick walls (500mm) but no insluation. The ceilings are also quite substantially built. Bricks here are the type with a lot of voids. I had hoped, through the warm part of the year, that the thick walls would not require any...

    Moth ID

I've been getting a lot of these in my workshop and some in the house, which are part of the same old building, and I despatch about 5 or 6 every day. They normally appear in the early evening and are less than an inch long, does anyone know what they are?

Some inspiration for anyone into timber framing and carving

Out of interest I picked one of the more robust looking gates from the website link and googled the village. I looked on the google camera images to see if it might still exist and, although I didn't find the same gate, I did find one that looked very similar. Other houses in the village also...

    Rotten Wood problem

I'm not dead set against expanding foam at all, I just meant that that was the only thing I could think of and wondered if anyone had any other suggestions. That's basically it Roger. I can find long enough screws to get through to the dry wood underneath but now that there is a void how do I...

    Rotten Wood problem

In my oldish house there are a couple of internal doors that have obvious rot at the bottom of the frames. The rot is caused by a lack of damp proof course on one particular internal wall which needs a dealing with but I don't have time right now. Before starting, my plan was to cut off the...

    Mobile data usage concerns

Mod edit: Steve, I've started a new thread for you. I have a wifi question related to my property. My house is single storey and long (approx 30m end to end) and the walls are about 400mm thick. My internet is provided over a mobile network (router takes a sim card) but the router wifi...

    Door repair

I moved house earlier this year and one of the jobs that needed doing was to strip and repaint the internal doors and frames. The living room door had been damaged by, what looks like, someone forcing it open and had been crudely repaired with a nailed on bit of hardboard. This is the damaged...

    MDF cabinet advice

I'm going to be making a bathroom storage unit and my wife wants it painted rather than natural wood. MDF seems to be the logical choice but I've never used it before so I would like some pointers on the best choices for fixing it all together and putting the paint on. It will look something...

    Foreign Electricity question

I live in Hungary and, like a lot of other non-UK countries, there are different rules and customs regarding electrical installations. In the UK, plugs and sockets are wired so that live always meets live and neutral always meets neutral whereas here (and I believe most or all mainland European...

    Roller stands

I've got these which I've only used a couple of times in about 4 years and they are great. Easy to set up and they fold away to take up less space when not in use.

Small Oak and Walnut Greek Urn

To form the design I have laid the foundations as much is possible with the 5 central thin rings and now comes the really fiddly bit. There are 12 'key' sections and I have to cut out 6 recesses on each one to swap the colour and create the pattern. Mark it out. 6 down, 66 to go. I started...

Small Oak and Walnut Greek Urn

I recently started messing about with segmented turning and when I posted my last finished piece someone suggested a WIP would be nice so, here it is. I actually started this a few weeks ago and it should be complete by the end of this week. I had an idea a while back about adding a greek key...

    Walnut and Mahogany Vase

I thought I'd give segmented turning a go.

    Designing a timber frame building

OK, I picked up the keys a couple of days ago and managed to get a few pictures of the barn structure. I had a better look at it and I spotted that one of the posts in the corner was completely missing the lower 150mm which had rotted away (no pic). I believe that has caused the adjacent back...
