• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Glue made out of sweets.

Forgive me if anyone has already mentioned this but I thought it might be of interest: https://blog.lostartpress.com The article by Chris Schwarz of the Lost Art Press describes how you can make functioning wood glue from sweets. It's not something I'd bother with but it will probably be of...

    An odd picture

Here you go, Andy. This is the pic which shows the building in its surroundings. I presume that the reflective cladding is arranged in triangles which are each a few degrees off vertical. The building is opposite the south entrance to Berlin main station.

    An odd picture

We've not had a photo thread for a while and I recently took this and thought it weird enough to be perhaps worth showing: The overall effect is a series of demented pyramids. I wouldn't want to look at it while suffering from a hangover but I do keep coming back to it. Any thoughts? (If you...

Rip Sawing - A Cunning Alternative

In the past I've made no secret of the degree of incompetence I display when attempting rip sawing. Last night I wanted to rip down a 5" wide board into 2 x 2 1/2" pieces. I started off with my back saw, stayed bang on line for the first 3", then started to drift off to the right as usual. I...

    How Much??!!!? (No 2)

Have a look at this moving filletster plane and make sure you're sitting down before you look at the price: https://www.jimbodetools.com/products/p ... amy-89840u I have to admit that were I a lottery winner, I would buy that but with a view to using it. It also has the air of a precision tool...

    Jeff Beck RIP

I was shocked this morning to hear on the radio that Jeff Beck has died. Whenever the hackneyed old topic of who was the best guitarist came up, I always had three: Eric Clapton for fluidity, Rory Gallagher for wild feel and deep musicianship and Jeff Beck for genius that I could only glimpse...

Differing uses of different gouge types.

I've been meaning to ask this for a while but have never got round to it. The fact that there are in-cannel and out-cannel gouges implies that the types have different purposes. Can anybody explain what they are? I also presume that they are principally carvers' tools but are there also...

Gripping a thin piece of wood for ploughing.

Due to bad i.e. non-existent planning I found myself having to plough a groove in a shortish, thinnish piece of wood. The pictures below illustrate the improvised solution which was so successful that I will definitely use it again in the future. I took the pics so that I would have a record of...

    Napkin Rings

CHJ, those look very professional and rather attractive. Meanwhile, I've been perfecting my amateurism. These are about as thin as I reckon you can go and still be aesthetically acceptable. They're about 5/16" thick and are of cherry given one coat of Osmo oil which is designed for kitchen...

    Napkin Rings

Right then, the story so far. First of all, get your octagon sorted out (me neither, that's why I went to p 135 of By Hand & Eye by Walker and Tolpin (Lost Art Press). It's bound to be in the internet as well. The first measurement in the diameter of the hole. That is determined by the bit...

Luxury vs Indulgence or a combination thereof.

Some of the comments about pricing of woodworking mags got me thinking more widely about value. I think we can take it as read that quality always has a price. Then there's the concept of "Luxury Goods", which usually means no more than very expensive goods although you would expect them to be...

    Napkin Rings

I've been tasked to produce a set of napkin rings and I've decided for no particular reason that they should be octagonal on the outside but have a conventionally circular hole. They'll probably be 3/8" to 1/2" thick. I've found a bit of scrap from which I should be able to get a set of eight...

    Really sorting out tenons.

My sawing is usually mildly ropey and occasionally plain embarrassing. I've just sawn a load of smallish tenons and then got the big faces flat with the router plane as usual. Then I pared the by eye with a chisel. The results looked not too bad but I decided to do a quality check via the...

    Groove in Breadboard Ends.

Would you say that the groove in breadboard ends should be through or stopped? Is it simply a matter of taste or is there a functional reason for the choice? Thanks in advance, Andy.

    The Nature of Jazz

I went to a jazz club with a couple of friends last night. While I wouldn't call myself a jazz fanatic, I probably have more than 30 CDs in my collection and I tend to like the stuff which is rooted in blues i.e. most of it and my outer limit of acceptability is Thelonious Monk. It's quite clear...

    Dovetail Chisel?

Bear with me on this as it is speculation. If you want to do a sliding dovetail housing, it is typically done by cutting the housing/dado then using an angled block with a chisel to get the dovetail wall angle in. A couple of people seem to have made a plane to cut the female bit of the...

    Skirting Board/Decorating Question

Afternoon All, I've just been stripping old paper off a wall in order to paint the wall. The skirting board is fairly narrow, probably about 1 1/2" (35 mm) and I will want to eventually replace it with something more like 3" (75 mm). A question arises, which I suppose belongs here because it is...

I need the name of a tool.

Please bear with me on this because I don't know what the tool in question is called and so will have to describe it in the hope that somebody can put a name to it. Imagine a ruler/straight edge thingy, say about 2" - 3" wide which would typically be laid across the grain of a piece of wood. It...

    Plane prices going daft?

I just noticed a Lie-Neilsen 5 1/2 offered on the Jim Bode website for US $565. It's not bronze and doesn't look like a special edition or anything. The same plane is on offer new on the L-N website for US $425. I can't work that out. What's going on? Good job I'm not in the market for any planes!

    A Nesting Ledge

This is one for those who know their ornithology. In spring I noticed what I am fairly sure was a peregrine falcon fly down to one of the student accommodation blocks at work, inspect the wall closely and then hoof it, not to be seen again. As far as I am aware, the natural nesting site of the...
