• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    House Insulation

I moved home earlier this year and my new house has very thick brick walls (500mm) but no insluation. The ceilings are also quite substantially built. Bricks here are the type with a lot of voids. I had hoped, through the warm part of the year, that the thick walls would not require any...

    Moth ID

I've been getting a lot of these in my workshop and some in the house, which are part of the same old building, and I despatch about 5 or 6 every day. They normally appear in the early evening and are less than an inch long, does anyone know what they are?

    Rotten Wood problem

In my oldish house there are a couple of internal doors that have obvious rot at the bottom of the frames. The rot is caused by a lack of damp proof course on one particular internal wall which needs a dealing with but I don't have time right now. Before starting, my plan was to cut off the...

    Mobile data usage concerns

Mod edit: Steve, I've started a new thread for you. I have a wifi question related to my property. My house is single storey and long (approx 30m end to end) and the walls are about 400mm thick. My internet is provided over a mobile network (router takes a sim card) but the router wifi...

    Door repair

I moved house earlier this year and one of the jobs that needed doing was to strip and repaint the internal doors and frames. The living room door had been damaged by, what looks like, someone forcing it open and had been crudely repaired with a nailed on bit of hardboard. This is the damaged...

    MDF cabinet advice

I'm going to be making a bathroom storage unit and my wife wants it painted rather than natural wood. MDF seems to be the logical choice but I've never used it before so I would like some pointers on the best choices for fixing it all together and putting the paint on. It will look something...

    Foreign Electricity question

I live in Hungary and, like a lot of other non-UK countries, there are different rules and customs regarding electrical installations. In the UK, plugs and sockets are wired so that live always meets live and neutral always meets neutral whereas here (and I believe most or all mainland European...

Small Oak and Walnut Greek Urn

I recently started messing about with segmented turning and when I posted my last finished piece someone suggested a WIP would be nice so, here it is. I actually started this a few weeks ago and it should be complete by the end of this week. I had an idea a while back about adding a greek key...

    Walnut and Mahogany Vase

I thought I'd give segmented turning a go.

    Designing a timber frame building

All a bit hypothetical at the moment but my next big project could be to build a timber frame building approx 4m x 12m, concrete pad, ground floor use with a loft storage area. I'm an engineer but I'm not a builder so, I would need to figure out how to spec the correct size material to support...

This years family xmas presents sorted

I've been fairly busy in my workshop over the last couple of months making xmas presents for my family. One sister asked for tea lights and I had just finished making a segment cutting jig for the table saw as well as a hexagon cutting jig to make some coasters so I decided to combine the two...

    Bandsaw lower blade guides

I have managed to break the metal carrier for the lower guide bearings on my Record Power bandsaw. RP don't stock spare parts so where is the best place to look?

    Fascinating and talented workmanship

I occasionally wander over to the UKworkshop forum and I came across this thread which has been running for a little while. It covers riving boards form large Oak trunks to intricate carving and is fascinating, well written and informative. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did...

    Table saw blade recommendation

Hi, I had a wade through the old posts to try and find the answer but after 10 pages I gave up so, sorry if this has been answered a million times. I want to get a spare blade for my table saw (Axminster 216mm) and I emailed Cutting Solutions, as recommended by several people I remember, but...

    Keepsake/Jewellery Box

I recently made a small keepsake box which was my first attempt at any kind of box making and also my first attempt at carving. I really enjoyed making that and thought I would make a bigger one with a more detailed carving on the lid. I used European Walnut for the box and Wenge for the...

    Keepsake Box

After completing the Japanese style toolbox with M&T's I thought it was about time I tried my hand at splined mitre joints. I had to build the necessary table saw jigs to complete this. The wood is European Walnut (a branch crotch section) with a Mahogany (maybe?) base and lid and a Sandalwood...

    Japanese style toolbox

Apart from screwing some bits of plywood together to protect my workshop gear when I moved house I have never made a box before. A friend helped me with my Pergola build and his toolbox was a rough pine box that had seen better days and had an old bit of window shutter cord as a handle. As a...

    River Mallet

A caught a friend looking covetously at my home made mallet while he was helping me with something so I decided to make him one. It's made from a lump of (wild?) cherry which had a bark inclusion under the surface so I filled it with blue epoxy. Length is about 175mm.

    Bandsaw kerf

I'm in the process of making my first small box and I've just glued it all together and I'm ready to cut the top off. I checked the kerf size on my bandsaw to compare it with the table saw and the table saw seems the better choice. Although the bandsaw blade is only 1mm thick it has a slight...

    Wedgie Sled

I've been turning for a few years and have reached the point where I want to try segmented turning. After doing some Youtube research I came across the wedgie sled design by Jerry Bennett which seems ideal but it requires the angles to be set using very accurately made wedges. I don't have a CNC...
